The grave stone of Hirz Kamen is the oldest Jewish grave stone of Burgenland.

Of course, we have dedicated Hirz Kamen a blog article: The oldest Jewish grave stone of Burgenland.

Exceptionally, the rather short but very beautiful inscription to be translated and commented:

Raschi interpretiert an old also Notarikon: It bought (smart) “Dieser erwarb (Weisheit)”.

Wachstein quotes the grave stone of Hirz Kamen shown above as an example of Baroque stones whose crown is made of superimposed asked Volutenbändern. Wachstein believed that the grave stone of the stone Zvi Hirsch ben Judah ha-Cohen Rapa on the Jewish cemetery Rossau (Seegasse, Vienna) is modeled from the year 1664th

In the introduction to his monograph Wachstein or Wolf writes that, especially in the early days of the Jewish community Eisenstadt (after 1672) many grave stones from Vienna were brought to Eisenstadt and was later resorted to the regional quarries. Of course, primarily on the Römersteinbruch in St. Margarethen close to Eisenstadt.
However, the grave stone of Hirz Kamen is neither Vienna nor from St. Margarethen, but most likely a stone wind, Possibly from Au am Leithagebirge.
